ABC for Camper Enthusiasts

General Information and Advice

New Zealand by camper or mobile home - there is hardly a more relaxing way to discover the entire country in three or four weeks. Our reliable partners have various models on offer and in some cases guarantee a maximum age for their vehicles.
A litre of petrol at present costs ±NZD 2.20; a litre of diesel ±NZD 1.45 (last updated: August 2014). You can look up the actual fuel prices at
Camp Grounds
New Zealand has a wide network of superb camp grounds. The best camp grounds are part of the Top 10 group ( Depending on the location of the site, a camp site costs between ±NZD 30 (without electricity) and NZD 60 (incl. electrical power point) per night for two persons and the vehicle.
Please note, that in the case of vehicles without a built-in toilet and no waste water tank no free (anywhere off-road) camping is allowed and camp grounds without ablutions may also not be used. Ignoring this regulation can result in substantial fines. Properly equipped vehicles come with a Freedom Camping Certificate.
You will also find detailed camping information on the website of the Department of Conversation ( and at
Camping Furniture
This can be hired directly from the rental company at a small fee or will be included in the case of the All Inclusive Packages on offer. Further information can be found under the rental conditions.
Diesel Tax
New Zealand levies a tax on diesel vehicles, which is based on the number of kilometres travelled. This is either included in the rental price as a lump sum or is calculated on the exact number of kilometres travelled at the end of the rental - please take note of the policy of the various rental companies in the price lists. In general you will cover 3-4 000km during a 3 week holiday and you should take this cost into consideration when choosing your rental company and planning your trip. The diesel tax is subject to change without prior notice.
All our camper offers include unlimited kilometres, additional drivers and interior equipment.
One-way Rentals
One-way rentals between the depots of the rental companies are possible (in some cases at a fee). The costs are listed in the rental conditions. In the case of rentals between the North and South Island the renter must bear the cost of transporting the vehicle across by ferry. Especially in peak season we recommend a timeous reservation.
Vehicle Types
The vehicles displayed can vary as to make, model and year of manufacture.

In order to chose the correct camper, it is important to make sure that the vehicle has at least as many approved seats as there are going to passengers on board. The same, of course, applies to the number of beds. In principle it is always good to chose a vehicle that is "one size bigger". It is also important to be clear about whether one only wants to sleep in the vehicle, or whether one also wants to cook and shower in it.

The following camper types are on offer (the various rental companies often use differing designations for their vehicles):
Mini-Camper: Vehicles based on so-called mini-vans or large limousines with seating space similar to a sedan and limited camping equipment. Without a shower/WC and no standing room.
Campervans: Compact box shaped vehicles (similar to a combi or microbus) with standing room thanks to a fixed (Hitop) or extendable (Poptop) high roof. Without shower/WC.
Camper: Spacious box shaped vehicles (eg. Mercedes Sprinter) with fixed high roof, often a passage between the driver's cabin and the living area, shower/WC and complete camping equipment. Usually for 2 or 3 persons.
Motorhomes: Large, comfortably equipped vehicles with built-up, wide and spacious living area for a minimum of 3-4 persons and usually a passage between the driver's cabin and the living area, as well as an alcove with double bed above the driver's cabin.

All rental companies reserve the right to hand a vehicle with higher specifications over to the client, due to non-availability of the confirmed vehicle (as a result of repairs, accidents etc.). The rental company will not entertain any claims for compensation due to increased costs arising from this (eg. due to a higher fuel consumption).
Vehicle Equipment
The interior is stocked with cooking utensils, towels and bedding (either sleeping bags or blankets) with sheets and pillows.
Vehicle Pick-up and Rental Agreement
After arrival in New Zealand we recommend a hotel stay for the first night, before picking up your vehicle. Make provision for two hours for the vehicle handover. Carefully check all functions and equipment before departure and demand that any deficiencies or damage is noted in writing and/or put right. When taking over the vehicle you will sign a rental agreement with the rental company. Please take special note of the insurance conditions and the procedure in the case of breakdowns or accidents. A security deposit will have to be paid by credit card. Please note that most rental companies will debit your credit card with the relevant amount. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; AMEX or Diners only at some places. The deposit is refunded, if the vehicle is returned clean, with a full fuel tank and without damage.
Driver and Driving Licence
The minimum driver age is 21 years (Spaceships: 18 years). An international driving licence, as well as a valid national driving licence, with a certified translation if the language is not English, is required for all drivers!
Long Term Rentals
Depending on the season and availability, we can generally make special offers available to you for longterm rentals. Please ask us!
Multiple Rentals
If you should be travelling in both Australia and New Zealand, the number of rental days can often be added together in order to qualify for longterm rental discounts. Terms and conditions apply!
Rental Stations
All rental companies have depots in Auckland and Christchurch. In general vehicles can only be picked up and dropped off here during office hours.
Breakdowns and Repairs
In spite of careful servicing and maintenance of the vehicles, breakdowns can occur or repairs can become necessary. You will then be informed as to what actions to take. In the case of major breakdowns the rental companies will only compensate the renter for the actual loss of use, but not for meals or hotel stays resulting from this.
There are absolutely no refunds for unused rental days.
As far as the calculation of the rental price is concerned, please take note of the published material of the rental company concerned. Every rental day is calculated according to the season into which it falls. The first and last rental days are charged as full days, regardless of the time of pick-up and drop-off.
The New Zealand Goods and Service Tax (GST - 15% at present) is already included in our prices.
In general our partners will make free return transfers between the airport and the depot avaibable to clients. Please take note of the information in the rental conditions.
Amended Reservation
An amended booking is treated like a cancellation and a completely new reservation. Please inform yourself in advance about the fees that will arise as a result of this.
The rule of the road in New Zealand is to keep left. The roads are often narrow and winding, so that you should keep your daily trips short. Work on an average speed of 60-70km/h at the most. The permitted maximum speed for vehicles weighing more than 3 500kg is 90km/h. Certain routes are closed to motorhomes, eg. Ninety Mile Beach in the north of the country.
Vehicle insurance with insurance excess in the case of damage is included in the standard rental price. In addition the All Inclusive Package can be booked at a surcharge. This includes the best possible insurance cover of the relevant rental company, that will lead to a reduction of the deposit that has to made on site. In addition items such as camping furniture, one-way fees or the diesel tax are included. The deposit that has to be made on site depends on the insurance package chosen. When the deposit is refunded to your credit card, the amount could be less than the original amount due to foreign exchange fluctuations.
In general no insurance will cover damage due to salt water, other water damage or driving on non-approved roads. The insurance policy also becomes invalid if damage is caused through negligence or willfulness or as a result of breach of contract.
Please take careful note of the insurance terms and conditions of the relevant rental company!
