Melbourne Adelaide Touring Route

Along the coast (Coastal Route) or via the interior (Inland Alternative)

The Melbourne Adelaide Touring Route combines diverse regions into a panorama route: The Great Ocean Road with the 12 Apostles, the Grampians National Park, the Limestone Coast as well as the wine growing areas of the Coonawarra Region and Kangaroo Island are only some of the sights. Do the route as a round tour and experience the coast as well as the interior.
The Limestone Coast
Characterized by rugged cliffs and lovely sandy beaches, the Limestone Coast is exactly halfway between Melbourne & Adelaide and joins the coastal towns of Robe, Beachport and Port MacDonnell. The limestone of this region is the cause of the unique pink colouring of the soil in the Coonawarra area, where many of the best wines in the world are produced. Breathtaking landscapes invite you to explore, and the Aborigines of the Ngarrindjeri share their stories about the land with you. Furthermore there are many caves that can be explored, such as the Naracoorte Caves, which are a World Heritage Site.
Kangaroo Island
lies ±120 km southwest of Adelaide. The island can be reached on a 30 minute flight or a 90 minunte road trip from Adelaide and a 45 minute ferry crossing from Cape Jervis. Kangaroo Island (KI) was officially populated by European settlers in 1836. Today KI is home to a multitude of animals such as kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, duck-billed platypus, goanna lizards, sea eagles, wallabies and seals.
The Fleurieu Peninsula
The beaches here are among the best in Australia. From the mouth of the Murray River to Victor Harbour and on to country towns, the Fleurieu Peninsula is home to many artists and craftsmen. Along the roads, in local galeries and at week-end markets you will find their creations.
In Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, there is always something on the go, such as art and gourmet festivals and also sporting events. The city invites one to shop and relax and apart from fine architecture and luxuriant gardens also offers a large selection of accommodation. Glenelg, Henley Beach and Semaphore, popular, cosmopolitan places with long, sandy beaches along the ocean, which are suited to day excursions as well as longer stays, are situaded only ±30 min. from the city centre.
