Great Southern Touring Route

Popular round trip from/to Melbourne

The Great Southern Touring Route offers you the highlights of four differing regions in Victoria. You can cover the route from Melbourne in four to six days. Melbourne, the starting point of the route, is the capital of Victoria and the sporting mecca of Australia. It is known for its theatres, art, restaurants, superb shopping opportunities and picturesque parklands.
Die Great Ocean Road
Restaurants with fantastic sea views, coastal towns, impressive wine estates and popular surfing beaches are typical of this region. Via Geelong and Queenscliff the route takes you to Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay and into the Otway National Park. The coastal landscape through which the winding road passes, with the Twelve Apostles, the Port Campbell National Park and sea-side towns is also known at the Shipwreck Coast. As suggested by the name, several ships have come to grief here. From Port Campbell the route continues to Warrnambool and Port Fairy.
The Grampians
Away from the coast the route passes through interesting small towns and agricultural areas to the Grampians National Park. The Aborigines were already attracted by the uniqueness of this region. Numerous rock paintings in the caves, depicting the legends and dreams of the original inhabitants, bear witness to this. Today the Grampians are an ideal destination for hikers, mountain climbers and nature lovers. Everywhere one comes across koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and emus on their forays through the area.
Ballarat/Goldfields
Around 1851 the first gold was discovered in Australia and the gold rush began. The wealth of those days is manifested in numerous lovingly restored, historical buildings as well as in an open-air museum in Sovereign Hill. Travelling time to Melbourne is about 1½ hours. Tip: Let yourself be spoiled for a day in Daylesford, Australia's spa and recreation centre.
The Great Southern Touring Route round trip can easily be combined with the Sydney-Melbourne route or the Melbourne-Adelaide route.
